In Tirado: 3ra Colección, guitarist Christopher Avilez revitalizes the forgotten legacy of Pedro Ximénez Abril y Tirado (1784–1856), a highly prolific 19th-century Ibero-American composer. Born in Arequipa and based in Sucre, Ximénez Abril y Tirado bridged European colonial traditions with emerging Creole identities through an expansive body of sacred, orchestral, and chamber works. Although his output fell into obscurity after his death, recent archival discoveries have illuminated his historical significance. This album presents 29 previously unpublished guitar pieces, continuing a vital process of rediscovery and offering listeners a rare encounter with a major voice in Andean classical music.
Mexican classical guitarist Christopher Avilez boasts an illustrious international career, having performed across Europe and the Americas as a soloist with prominent orchestras, including the Orquesta de Cámara de Morelos and the Orquesta Sinfónica del Cusco. His extensive academic background includes advanced studies in Mexico, Austria, Germany, and Spain. Avilez's notable discography of six albums highlights his commitment to musical preservation, featuring the double album 3ª Colección Pedro Ximénez Abril y Tirado alongside recordings of historical and contemporary works. Recognized with over twenty competition prizes, he has also received prestigious state cultural grants from Mexico's National Fund for Culture and the Arts.
