By the 17th century, the expansion and economic prosperity of the Spanish Empire fostered a cultural golden age, notably sparking an extraordinary musical flowering in Naples. A defining feature of this Neapolitan style was the expressive combination of the mandolin with the human voice, a unique pairing that influenced European classical music for decades. Acclaimed soprano and Baroque specialist Núria Rial joins forces with the Artemandoline ensemble to virtuosically recreate this rich Mediterranean musical landscape, showcasing the expressive depth and enduring legacy of early Neapolitan vocal and instrumental repertoire.
Spanish soprano Núria Rial (born 1975) is an acclaimed specialist in Baroque music and chamber repertoire. Having trained in Basel, she has performed at Europe's leading music festivals and collaborated with distinguished conductors such as Sir John Eliot Gardiner and René Jacobs, appearing in prestigious venues like the Berlin Staatsoper and Brussels’s Théâtre de la Monnaie. Her versatile artistry also extends to contemporary opera, notably in Osvaldo Golijov's Ainadamar. An exclusive Sony Classical artist, Rial boasts an extensive discography recognized with multiple Echo Klassik awards and an Orphée d’Or, cementing her reputation as an exceptional vocal talent on the global stage.
Founded by Juan Carlos Muñoz and Mari Fe Pavón, Artemandoline is a pioneering early music ensemble dedicated to restoring the mandolin's historical repertoire. Performing works from the 17th to 19th centuries on period instruments, the group ranges in size from small chamber formations to larger orchestras. Artemandoline rigorously researches original scores to resurrect forgotten masterpieces, aiming to demonstrate the timeless, universal value of early music for modern audiences. Celebrated by critics and public alike for their innovative, fiery, and spontaneous performance style, the ensemble has successfully forged a distinct global identity as leaders in the revival of historical plucked music.
