Spanning from 1892 to 1932, this album presents a curated collection of lesser-known French and Belgian repertoire unified by the artistic lineage of César Franck. Rather than showcasing Franck directly, the program highlights rare masterpieces by his students and musical heirs. The selection centers on Guillaume Lekeu's rarely recorded Violin Sonata, complemented by Charlotte Sohy’s Thème varié and three pieces by Mel Bonis. The album also revives overlooked works, including Camille Saint-Saëns's two Élégies, Olivier Messiaen’s Thème et variations, and a haunting Nocturne by Elsa Barraine, tracing a fascinating evolution of early twentieth-century soundscapes.
A graduate of the Curtis Institute and The Juilliard School, violinist Elena Urioste is an acclaimed soloist and chamber musician. She has performed with major orchestras globally—including the Philadelphia Orchestra and London Philharmonic—and appears as a co-director of the Kaleidoscope Chamber Collective. Her extensive discography includes The Jukebox Album, which won a 2022 BBC Music Magazine Award, and Max Richter's The New Four Seasons. Urioste plays an 1706 Alessandro Gagliano violin, generously on loan through the Stradivari Society of Chicago. Also a writer, yogi, and entrepreneur, she is the founder of the Chamber Music by the Sea festival.
Pianist, composer, and arranger Tom Poster is celebrated for his exceptional musical versatility and collaborative spirit. Having performed as a soloist with major orchestras like the London Philharmonic and BBC Philharmonic, Poster is also the co-founder and artistic director of the Kaleidoscope Chamber Collective, an Associate Ensemble at Wigmore Hall. During the 2020 lockdown, his creative partnership with violinist Elena Urioste produced the acclaimed #UriPosteJukeBox project and the subsequent award-winning release, The Jukebox Album. A prolific recording artist, Poster also contributes to major film soundtracks and maintains an active career as a commissioned composer.
