Renowned bassoonist Sophie Dervaux, principal of the Vienna Philharmonic, has reached the halfway mark in her ambitious project to record all 37 of Antonio Vivaldi’s completed bassoon concertos. Accompanied by the La Folia Baroque Orchestra, her third volume highlights the expressive range, technical challenges, and spontaneous brilliance of these landmark works, which were originally composed for the virtuosos of Venice’s Ospedale della Pietà. For Dervaux, this ongoing milestone offers continuous artistic discovery and dynamic diversity, bringing vibrant fresh life to foundational Baroque repertoire 285 years after the composer’s death.

Sophie Dervaux, principal bassoonist of the Vienna Philharmonic and Vienna State Opera Orchestra, is an internationally acclaimed soloist, conductor, and educator. After completing her studies in Versailles, Lyon, and Berlin, including the Karajan Academy, she won top prizes at the ARD Competition and Beethoven Ring Bonn. Dervaux has performed with leading orchestras at premier venues worldwide like Carnegie Hall and the Royal Albert Hall. Her acclaimed discography for Berlin Classics features award-winning albums as both soloist and conductor with ensembles like the Munich Chamber Orchestra. A dedicated chamber musician and professor at Vienna’s MUK, she actively champions the bassoon internationally.
