Cellist Haruma Sato, the first Japanese winner of the 2019 Munich International Music Competition and a former first-prize winner at the Lutosławski Competition, presents a live recording of J.S. Bach’s complete Cello Suites. Captured on April 24, 2026, at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Tokyo, this landmark release vividly captures Sato’s rich tone, outstanding technique, and fresh musical interpretations within the venue’s transcendent acoustic environment. Preserving the unique concentration and atmosphere of the live performance, the album showcases the acclaimed international cellist bringing a profound, expressive depth to one of the most essential cornerstones of the cello repertoire.

Acclaimed Japanese cellist Haruma Sato gained international prominence as the first Japanese winner of the 2019 Munich International Music Competition, following first-prize honors at the Lutosławski Competition. A graduate of Tokyo University of the Arts currently studying at the Berlin University of the Arts under Jens-Peter Mainz, he has performed with top ensembles including the Bavarian Radio Symphony and Berlin Konzerthaus Orchestra under Christoph Eschenbach. Sato records exclusively for Deutsche Grammophon, earning multiple CD Shop and Idemitsu Music Awards. Playing an 1903 E. Rocca cello, he maintains an active global career spanning concerto engagements, recitals, and chamber music.
