Although primarily remembered today as Fryderyk Chopin's talented teacher, Józef Elsner was an accomplished composer, singer, and key figure in Warsaw’s musical life. A pioneer of the Polish national school, Elsner frequently integrated native folk elements like the krakowiak and polonaise into Viennese Classical structures. His string quartets represent a pivotal phase in Polish chamber music, characterized by formal experimentation and variation form. Featuring revised versions of these works recorded a decade after their composition, the Elsner Ensemble, comprising musicians from the composer’s hometown, demonstrates the enduring artistic value of these rarely performed historical treasures.
