Born in Yorkshire in 1933, legendary English mezzo-soprano Janet Baker rose to international acclaim without formal institutional musical training. After starting her career as a bank clerk and singing locally, her performance in Haydn’s Nelson Mass prompted a move to London to study under Helene Isepp. Securing second prize in the 1956 Kathleen Ferrier Competition propelled her career, leading to celebrated performances at Glyndebourne and the English National Opera, as well as a renowned collaboration with Benjamin Britten. Honored with a CBE in 1970, Baker established herself as one of Britain’s finest classical vocalists before retiring from the stage in 1982.
