Wild Love, an innovative recording project by the ensemble Il Pomo d'Oro, bridges the centuries-old creative intersection of Frank Zappa and 18th-century Milanese composer Francesco Zappa. Inspired by Frank Zappa’s 1884 album dedicated to his mistaken ancestor, this concept album juxtaposes Francesco's galant compositions with Frank’s contemporary works for string quintet. Under the music direction of Milanese musicologist Vanni Moretto and featuring cellist Giovanni Sollima, the ensemble blurs hierarchical boundaries by introducing original works, including Moretto’s reimagined sinfonia concertante of Frank's music. The recording delivers a fresh, cohesive dialogue that celebrates both artists while restoring Francesco Zappa’s legacy to the modern classical canon.

Born in 1962, Giovanni Sollima is an internationally renowned cellist and the world’s most performed Italian composer. Celebrated for his innovative stylistic range, he incorporates historical, electronic, and custom instruments into his work, famously performing on underwater stages, in deserts, and on a cello carved from ice. His prolific career includes collaborations with esteemed artists such as Yo-Yo Ma and Riccardo Muti, alongside performances in top global venues like Carnegie Hall and Teatro alla Scala. Sollima serves as a professor at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, co-founded the 100 Cellos ensemble, and records extensively across major classical labels.

Founded in 2012 by Gesine Lübben and Giulio d’Alessio, Il Pomo d’Oro is an elite, period-instrument orchestra acclaimed for authentic interpretations of Baroque to Bel Canto repertoire. Named after Antonio Cesti’s lavish 1666 imperial opera, the ensemble combines stylistic expertise with technical precision under chief conductor Maxim Emelyanychev. Il Pomo d’Oro performs in prestigious international venues—including Wigmore Hall and Theater an der Wien—and hosts a concert season in Venice. Renowned for its focus on opera revivals, instrumental music, and vocal recitals, the orchestra collaborates with world-class artists, delivering an extensive, award-winning discography on major classical labels.
