Pianist Hannah Roberts explores the repertoire of prolific Scottish composer Helen Hopekirk in CELTIC LEGENDS: THE PIANO MUSIC OF HELEN HOPEKIRK. Formally trained in Vienna, Hopekirk uniquely combined late-Romantic classical traditions with her native Scottish heritage, utilizing the piano to weave narrative tales of her homeland. Delivered with crisp clarity and buoyant energy, Roberts’s interpretations highlight the cheery melodies and storytelling attributes of Celtic music within a solo keyboard context. Through this recording, Roberts celebrates a distinctive synthesis of regional style and classical form while championing an important historical female voice in the piano repertoire.

Scottish pianist, composer, and teacher Helen Hopekirk (1856–1945) sustained a distinguished six-decade career across Europe and the United States. Following studies at the Leipzig Conservatory and under Theodor Leschetizky, who famously praised her exceptional musicianship, she performed in major venues such as London’s Crystal Palace and New York’s Steinway Hall. After relocating to Boston in 1897 to join the New England Conservatory faculty, Hopekirk became a prominent private educator, naturalized U.S. citizen, and active composer. Throughout her life, she maintained a deep artistic connection to her Celtic heritage, blending her Scottish identity with late-Romantic European traditions until her death at age 89.

American pianist and pedagogue Hannah Roberts, Assistant Professor of Piano at the University of Alabama, is widely recognized for championing overlooked female composers in the keyboard repertoire. Holding a D.M.A. from the University of Oklahoma, Roberts maintains an active international performance career alongside her research, which places special emphasis on Scottish-American composer Helen Hopekirk. Recipient of the 2023 Edward T. Cone Fellowship from the Society for American Music, she has published extensively in journals such as American Music Teacher and presented at major national conferences, including the NCKP, CMS, and MTNA, furthering research and advocacy for historical women in music.
