Robert Schumann’s Symphonic Études (1835/1837), based on a theme by Baron von Fricken with a finale drawing from Heinrich Marschner’s opera Der Templer und die Jüdin, stands as a monument of the piano repertoire. Revised by Schumann in 1852 and later edited posthumously by Friedrich Wieck, the work undergoes complex structural transformations across its versions. Paired here with Gabriel Fauré’s Variations, Op. 73, the album highlights a profound stylistic connection: Fauré drew direct inspiration from Schumann's masterpiece, mirroring its key signature until a final shift to C-sharp major. Together, these virtuosic works present formidable technical and interpretive challenges for the pianist.

Danny Driver (b. 1977) is a British pianist acclaimed for his musical depth, wide-ranging repertoire, and imaginative programming. A Gramophone Award-nominated artist, he has performed with major orchestras worldwide, including the Philharmonia, BBC Scottish Symphony, Minnesota, and Royal Philharmonic, under conductors such as Charles Dutoit and Andrew Litton. A regular at Wigmore Hall, he will launch a five-recital “Variations” series there in 2025 and make his New York debut at Carnegie Hall. His acclaimed Hyperion recordings span Baroque to contemporary works, notably Ligeti’s Études. Passionate about chamber music, he collaborates with artists like Chloë Hanslip and Christian Immler.
