Born in Tallinn in 1937, legendary Estonian conductor Neeme Järvi studied in Leningrad under Evgeny Mravinsky before emigrating to the United States in 1980. Over a prolific career spanning several decades, he held principal leadership positions with top ensembles, including a landmark 22-year tenure with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and leadership of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. As Principal Conductor of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra from 1984 to 1988, Järvi built an expansive, highly acclaimed discography, notably recording definitive Prokofiev, Dvořák, and Shostakovich cycles. With over 500 recordings to his name, including a February 2026 Chandos release, he remains one of the world's most recorded conductors.
