SOMM Recordings continues its acclaimed Elgar from the Archives series with Volume 4, featuring restored historic performances from the extensive collection of audio engineer Lani Spahr. The album pairs the Concert Overture In the South (Alassio), Op. 50, with Symphony No. 1 in A-flat major, Op. 55. Highlighted by a rare and courageous 1953 East German recording of the overture by Gerhard Pflüger and the Symphony Orchestra of Radio Leipzig, the release also includes a monumental live 1958 broadcast of the First Symphony performed by Sir John Barbirolli and the Hallé Orchestra for the ensemble's centenary celebrations.

Gerhard Pflüger (1907–1991) was a prominent German conductor who studied under Kurt Striegler and Fritz Busch in Dresden. His early career included Kapellmeister posts in Stralsund, Gotha, Nordhausen, Altenburg, and Meiningen before joining the Nazi Party in 1940. Following World War II, Pflüger joined the Socialist Unity Party and held major musical directorships across East Germany, including the Volkstheater Rostock, the MDR Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Deutsches Nationaltheater Weimar. A dedicated educator, he directed conducting programs in Rostock and Weimar, ultimately receiving the Art Prize of the German Democratic Republic in 1972.

John Barbirolli (1899-1970) was a British conductor and cellist, renowned for his passionate interpretations and deep connection with the music. Born in London, he began his career as a cellist before transitioning to conducting. He was the conductor of the Hallé Orchestra for nearly three decades, revitalizing the ensemble and making it one of the world's finest. Barbirolli was also the music director of the New York Philharmonic and the Houston Symphony. His recordings of Mahler and Elgar are considered definitive, and his legacy continues to inspire musicians and audiences worldwide.
