For the fourth installment of their complete Mahler symphony cycle, Paavo Järvi and the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich perform the colossal Symphony No. 2 ("Resurrection"). Written over six years and completed in 1894, this expansive five-movement masterwork requires a massive orchestra, chorus, and vocal soloists. The composition emerged during a turbulent period in Mahler’s life, marked by personal bereavement, artistic setbacks, and anti-Semitic hostility in Budapest. Capturing this profound existential struggle, Järvi and his Zürich forces convey both the terrifying chaos of life and the ultimate spiritual redemption central to Mahler’s vision.

Estonian conductor Paavo Järvi (b. 1962) is one of today’s leading maestros, renowned for his dynamic artistry and deep musical insight. He is Music Director of the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, Artistic Director of the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, and founder of the Estonian Festival Orchestra. Järvi continues his Mahler symphony cycle with the Tonhalle-Orchester during the 2024/25 season, following acclaimed recordings of Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky, Bruckner, Messiaen, and John Adams. A frequent guest with top orchestras worldwide, he also leads the Pärnu Music Festival in Estonia. His numerous honors include a Grammy Award, the Sibelius Medal, and the 2022 European Cultural Prize.
