Joachim Raff skillfully bridged Classical-Romantic traditions and the progressive innovations of Liszt and Wagner, utilizing the piano suite as an ideal canvas to synthesize past and present musical forms. In Suite No. 2 in C major, he pairs melodic charm with structural balance, while his masterwork Suite No. 4 in D minor seamlessly merges Baroque stylistic elements with Lisztian Romantic bravura. Performed by pianist Hyelim Kim, hailed by Fanfare as an ideal advocate for Raff’s repertoire, this recording highlights the composer’s inventive craft, rich pianistic textures, and historical significance in nineteenth-century keyboard literature.
South Korean pianist Hyelim Kim is an acclaimed soloist and chamber musician, earning top honors at major international contests including the Clara Haskil and Hastings Piano Competitions. Following early studies in Korea and debut with the Filarmonica 'Mihail Jora' Bacău at age ten, she refined her artistry in Germany under Claudio Martínez Mehner and Nina Tichman, earning degrees from Düsseldorf and Cologne. Kim performs extensively across Europe and Asia at prestigious venues like the Elbphilharmonie and Kölner Philharmonie, collaborating with prominent ensembles such as the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and appearing at renowned international music festivals.
