Art Choral, Vol. 8: Québec presents an immersive survey spanning more than four centuries of Québec’s rich choral heritage. Moving fluidly across eras, the collection spans 17th-century French masses brought to New France, cherished traditional folk songs artfully reimagined by Jean-François Daignault, and dynamic modern works by composer Claude Vivier, among others. The album’s compelling strength lies in its seamless blending of centuries-old Renaissance counterpoint and enduring oral traditions with contemporary techniques. Highlights include the premiere recording of "Maison fermée," which fuses classical influences with modern minimalism, and "Ja de longtemps," capturing the profound spirit of the Québec landscape through intricate textures.

Rooted in Québec’s choral tradition for over four decades, Ensemble ArtChoral is an award-winning professional choir directed by two-time JUNO recipient Matthias Maute. Residing at the Maison symphonique, the ensemble performs extensively across Canada and internationally, notably through its acclaimed annual performance of Handel’s Messiah. Since 2020, ArtChoral has demonstrated significant social and artistic commitment by making thousands of professional singer hires, delivering 12,000 door-to-door health concerts to underserved communities, and co-founding initiatives to develop new operas by diverse creators. Currently, the ensemble is executing ART CHORAL, a historic digital library project spanning six centuries of a cappella music.
