In the second volume of The Beethoven Connection, pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet explores piano works by Beethoven’s contemporaries: Johann Nepomuk Hummel, Muzio Clementi, Ludwig Berger, and Carl Czerny. Curated with guidance from musicologist Marc Vignal, the project illuminates Beethoven’s genius while celebrating the intrinsic artistic merit of his peers. Using a geographical analogy, Bavouzet compares these surrounding composers to neighboring peaks that enhance and contextualize a central summit. Through this enthusiastic exploration, Bavouzet offers listeners a broader perspective on the era's keyboard repertoire, restoring overlooked late-18th and early-19th-century classical masterpieces to their rightful place alongside Beethoven’s towering legacy.
