Maurice Ravel elevated the 17th-century tombeau tradition into a high art form with his poignant, post-WWI work Le Tombeau de Couperin. Continuing this tradition of musical homage, pianist Gabriel Durliat’s second Scala Music album features a succession of tombeaux spanning from Jean-Philippe Rameau to Olivier Messiaen. In this program, each composer honors the artist preceding them, creating an interconnected musical chain across history. The deliberate silences between pieces function as bridges of memory, seamlessly extending these expressive tributes across time and space into a continuous, atmospheric reflection on legacy.
Born in 2001, French musician Gabriel Durliat trained at the Paris Conservatoire and the Académie Jaroussky, earning top honors in piano, harmony, orchestration, and conducting. First prize winner of the 2022 Piano Campus competition and awardee at the 2023 Hans von Bülow Piano-Conducting Competition, he studied conducting with figures like Fabio Luisi and served as assistant conductor for the Ensemble Intercontemporain. Durliat performs extensively as a soloist and chamber musician at leading festivals such as La Roque d'Anthéron, and released his debut Bach-Fauré album on Scala Music in 2024.
