SOMM Recordings celebrates the vibrant culture of Cyprus with a new release featuring conductor-composer Nimrod Borenstein and the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra performing works inspired by the Mediterranean island and Shakespeare’s Othello. The album centers on Borenstein’s single-movement title composition, Legends of Cyprus, alongside Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s dramatic Othello Suite and Antonín Dvořák’s concert overture Othello. Completing the program are two celebrated selections from Franz Schubert’s incidental music for Helmina von Chézy’s Cyprus-set play, Rosamunde. Together, these masterfully executed performances highlight both Cyprus’s rich musical history and the orchestra’s standing as a premier national cultural symbol.

Nimrod Borenstein is an internationally acclaimed contemporary composer and conductor, whose catalogue of over 100 works spans orchestral, chamber, vocal, and solo music. His compositions have been premiered and recorded at prestigious venues worldwide, including Carnegie Hall, Royal Festival Hall, and Salle Gaveau, and championed by leading artists such as Vladimir Ashkenazy, Pascal Rogé, and Dmitry Sitkovetsky. Notable works include the widely performed ballet Suspended, Op. 69, and commissioned competition pieces. An accomplished conductor, Borenstein leads major recording projects with the English Chamber Orchestra, Cyprus Symphony Orchestra, and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, demonstrating a compelling synthesis of compositional ingenuity and orchestral leadership.
