Conceived by the Palazzetto Bru Zane, this program explores "le fantastique" in French symphonic music from 1850 to 1914, tracing how high fantasy, populated by ghosts, demons, and witches, supplanted Baroque opera's magical traditions. Featuring evocative overtures, ballets, and preludes by Gounod, Guiraud, Carraud, and Schmitt, the album highlights mysterious atmospheric colors and orchestration. Crucially, it showcases world-premiere recordings of works by unjustly neglected female composers Augusta Holmès and Marie Jaëll. Under the baton of Pierre Dumoussaud, the Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine delivers a magnificent performance that restores these rare late-Romantic symphonic gems to the public sphere.

Appointed Musical Director of the Opéra Orchestre Normandie Rouen starting in the 2026–2027 season, Pierre Dumoussaud is an acclaimed French conductor celebrated for his lively, articulate, and expressive technique across opera, symphonic, and ballet repertoires. Since winning the 2017 International Competition for Opera Conductors and receiving the inaugural "Revelation Conductor" award at the 2022 Victoires de la Musique, he has conducted at major European venues, including the Paris Opera, Bayerische Staatsoper, and Zurich Opera. Trained at the Paris Conservatoire, Dumoussaud boasts an award-winning discography focused on 19th- and 20th-century French music, alongside an active international guest-conducting schedule spanning Europe and Asia.
