In Sulla Piazza, a consort of violins navigates the vibrant soundscape of 16th-century Venice, tracing the instrument's rise from street corners to sacred spaces. Capturing the dynamic rhythm of daily life in the city of the Doges, the project creates an immersive musical fresco where the emerging violin bridges diverse social spheres. From solemn prayers beneath the arcades of St. Mark’s Basilica to lively tavern dances lasting until dawn, this evocative recording brings the rich cultural fabric and historical elegance of Renaissance Venice to life through masterful string performances.
Founded by Dorine Lepeltier-Kovács, La Capriola is an award-winning early music ensemble exploring 16th-century violin polyphony and Renaissance musical heritage. Combining musicological research with multidisciplinary performance, the project operates across three distinct branches: the La Capriola Consort, the theatrical La Capriola-Commedia, and the early-Baroque focused La Capriola. La Capriola Consort performs sacred and secular repertoire using a rare, custom-built family of seven period Cremonese violins, complemented by voice, harp, organ, and lutes. Laureates of prestigious international early music competitions, their debut album, Sulla Piazza, releases in October 2026 on the Ricercar | Outhere Music label.
