The Takács Quartet marks its 21st album for Hyperion with Mozart’s String Quintets K. 515 and K. 516, recorded live at London’s Wigmore Hall. Acclaimed violist Timothy Ridout joins the ensemble for his first recording with the Quartet, infusing Mozart's rich, 1787 chamber textures with a fresh inner-voice interplay. The release also stands as a milestone in the Quartet’s history, featuring founding cellist András Fejér for the final time and concluding his distinguished 51-year tenure. Praised by The Daily Telegraph as "the undisputed greatest string quartet in the world," the Takács Quartet delivers a performance filled with poetry, clarity, and expressive tension.
Founded in Budapest in 1975, the Takács Quartet is widely celebrated as one of today’s preeminent string quartets, renowned for bringing deep integrity, insight, and expressiveness to both classical masterpieces and contemporary compositions. Since 1986, the ensemble has maintained a residency at the University of Colorado, Boulder, balancing a dedication to teaching with an extensive global concert schedule as frequent guests at premier venues like London's Wigmore Hall. Recording exclusively for Hyperion Records since 2005, the Quartet has earned multiple prestigious honors, including Grammy and Gramophone Awards, solidifying its enduring legacy across five decades of musical excellence.
