In February 964, a quiet revolution transformed Winchester Cathedral when corrupt canons were replaced by monks, giving rise to some of Western music’s earliest polyphony. Preserved in the Winchester Troper, these intricate masterpieces reveal an unexpected modernity through intertwining voices, soaring flutes, and evocative narration inspired by the poet Wulfstan. In Nexus Winchester, Ensemble Dialogos reimagines this historical turning point not as a static relic, but as a dynamic drama. Blending sacred history with vivid soundscapes, the performance explores the friction between power, silence, and song, demonstrating how ancient musical rebellion continues to resonate in the modern world.
Founded in 1997 by director Katarina Livljanić, Ensemble Dialogos is an internationally acclaimed ensemble dedicated to reviving the oral and written musical traditions of medieval Europe. Celebrated for rigorous musicological research and innovative staging, the group specializes in uncovering forgotten repertoires, particularly from the Southern Slavic world. Dialogos performs at prestigious global venues, including New York’s Lincoln Center and Paris’s Cité de la musique, earning widespread critical praise from major publications such as The New York Times. Their award-winning discography on the Arcana label—highlighted by a Diapason d’Or of the Year for La Vision de Tondal—underscores their position as leading interpreters of early music.
