No other country has had a greater impact on the development and innovation of Western music than Italy. From notation systems to the invention of different musical genres, Italian music theorists, peda - gogues, composers and artists have played an indispensable role in the creation of new musical forms. Italian luthiers and makers of musical instruments more generally contributed immensely to the invention and design of new instruments, includ ing the piano, whose invention is credited to Bartolomeo Cristofori of Padua at the end of the seventeenth century. While the remarkable volume of Italian innovation and music-making through the centuries is well known and recognized worldwide, Italian piano concertos are consistently missing from the standard repertoire. Encompassing music from the post-Romantic style of composer Guido Alberto Fano to one of today’s leading Italian compositional voices Cristian Carrara, as well as the highly original musical language of Luigi Dallapiccola and Silvio Omizzolo, this recording provides a rare opportunity to experience the contributions of four Italian composers from the modern era to the literature for piano and orchestra. All four pieces speak the universal language of their time, and yet they are very Italianate: virtuosic, with energetic rhythms, warm expressions, captivating harmonies and a great sense of melody.
Pianist Roberto Prosseda, a champion of Italian con - temporary music and undiscovered piano music from the old masters, is the protagonist and the motor behind this project. When approached by Roberto to record these four treasures, a new and fascinating window opened for me to get a deeper look into this beautiful Italian music for piano and orchestra from the twentieth century and beyond. Grateful for the opportunity to share this extraordinary music with the world, I hope this recording will contribute to Italy’s well-deserved place in the piano concerto genre, and delight audiences around the globe.
