Shostakovich’s String Quartets nos. 6 to 12, written between 1956 and 1968, are marked by the relative freedom regained after the death of Stalin. In the second volume of its complete set, the Cuarteto Casals explores this period of a dozen years in which the composer never ceased to innovate, constantly handling new geometries and ideas in his structures. A key moment in the history of the twentieth-century quartet!

Founded in 1997 at Madrid’s Escuela Reina Sofía, the Cuarteto Casals has become one of the world’s leading string quartets. Celebrating its 20th anniversary with an international Beethoven cycle and commissioned works, the group also explores Mozart, Bartók, Ligeti, and Kurtág. Winners of top competitions, they’ve performed at major venues like Carnegie Hall and the Concertgebouw.
