The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich is a dramatic cantata composed by Lalo Schifrin, originally inspired by the Emmy-nominated 1968 ABC television documentary produced by the esteemed David L. Wolper. Based on William L. Shirer’s best-selling book, the documentary chronicled Hitler’s rise and downfall, the result of two years of meticulous research and analysis of over five million feet of archival footage. Schifrin, already known for acclaimed television work, was moved by the subject and composed a full-scale concert work, which debuted at the Hollywood Bowl on August 3, 1967—months before the documentary’s airing.

The cantata was recorded with members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Gregg Smith Singers, conducted by Lawrence Foster. Originally released on vinyl with narration by Laurence Harvey, Dragon’s Domain Records now offers the score for the first time on CD, newly remastered and presented without narration.

Lalo Schifrin, an Argentine-born composer trained in Paris under Olivier Messiaen, forged a successful career in both classical and jazz traditions. After a pivotal collaboration with Dizzy Gillespie, he became a major figure in Hollywood, scoring over 100 film and television projects including Mission: Impossible, Bullitt, Dirty Harry, and the Rush Hour films.
