In this thoughtfully curated album, baritone Andrè Schuen honors his deep personal and artistic ties to Mozart and Salzburg, the composer’s birthplace. Recorded at the Mozarteum with the Mozarteum Orchestra under Roberto González-Monjas, the program features iconic arias and duets from Don Giovanni, Die Zauberflöte, and Le Nozze di Figaro. Schuen is joined by soprano Nikola Hillebrand and mandolinist Avi Avital, who adds flair to the famous serenade and “Komm liebe Zither.” The album also includes three intimate Mozart songs performed with pianist Daniel Heide, Schuen’s longtime collaborator on acclaimed Schubert recordings for Deutsche Grammophon.
Born in 1984 in South Tyrol, baritone Andrè Schuen began in folk music before studying voice at the Salzburg Mozarteum. Early roles at the Salzburg Festival and a debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker launched his career, leading to acclaim in Harnoncourt’s Mozart cycle. A frequent recitalist with pianist Daniel Heide, Schuen signed with Deutsche Grammophon, releasing a celebrated Schubert trilogy: Die schöne Müllerin, Schwanengesang (Opus Klassik winner 2023), and Winterreise, which became the soundtrack for the film A Winter’s Journey. His refined baritone, expressive depth, and musical intelligence have earned him a place among today’s leading lieder interpreters.
