Manuel María Ponce’s guitar sonatas reflect his exceptional stylistic range, blending romanticism, modernism, and nationalism. Initially influenced by French modern music, Ponce developed a unique voice incorporating neoclassical and folk elements. His collaboration with guitarist Andrés Segovia led to landmark works such as Sonata Mexicana (1923), Sonata III (1927), and Sonatina Meridional (1930). Notable tributes include Sonata Clásica (to Sor) and Sonata Romántica (to Schubert). Of his eight guitar sonatas, two were lost during the 1936 looting of Segovia’s apartment. Manuel María Ponce – Complete Guitar Sonatas presents all surviving works, performed under the direction of guitarist Stefano Grondona.
