Florence Price composed her Piano Concerto in D Minor (1934), also known as the Concerto in One Movement, in three sections: moderato, adagio, and an allegretto inspired by the African-American Juba dance. She premiered it at Chicago Music College’s commencement, earning acclaim and fostering a partnership with the Women’s Symphony Orchestra of Chicago. Her concerto was later performed by major U.S. symphonies, but WWII’s disruption of women’s orchestras and her death in 1953 led to neglect of her works. Rediscovery came in 2009, when manuscripts were found in her former summer home, allowing Trevor Weston to reconstruct the concerto. The original score resurfaced at auction in 2019, fueling renewed recognition.
