PENTATONE releases Richard Blackford’s new Cello Concerto, written for cellist Alisa Weilerstein and commissioned by the Czech Philharmonic under conductor Tomáš Netopil. Structured in four movements—Earth, Air, Water, and Fire—the work transforms natural forces into a powerful, personal musical narrative. Inspired by climate catastrophe, from raging California wildfires to the rebirth of communities from ashes, the concerto explores destruction, resilience, and hope. Weilerstein’s virtuosic playing, combined with the Czech Philharmonic’s evocative sound, captures the drama and urgency of this timely piece, offering a moving reflection on nature, humanity, and perseverance.
