Inspired by Annick de Souzenelle’s words—“Darkness is the future of light”—this album explores Schubert’s profound duality between light and shadow, life and death. Through Death and the Maiden and The Erlkönig, the Zaïde Quartet reveals how Schubert transforms death into something both seductive and peaceful, reflecting his own struggle between suffering and the will to live. His powerful, orchestral writing contrasts with moments of gentleness, capturing this tension vividly. While The Erlkönig ends in tragedy, the Fourteenth Quartet allows life to prevail. The album closes with an aria from Fierrabras, a luminous expression of love, melancholy, and ultimate redemption.

Founded in 2009, the Zaïde Quartet is an internationally acclaimed all-female ensemble known for its artistic excellence and exploration of the string quartet’s expressive range. Winners of major competitions in Bordeaux, Vienna, and Beijing, they have performed in leading venues worldwide alongside artists such as Martha Argerich and Michel Portal. In 2021, they founded the International String Quartet Academy (ISQA) to support musicians through a holistic, intergenerational exchange. Closely linked with NoMadMusic, they have released seven albums spanning classical to contemporary works, collaborating with composers like Bryce Dessner and Sofia Gubaidulina. The quartet embraces innovation, collaboration, and deep audience connection.
