In his debut recording for HR Recordings, Bulgarian lutenist Yavor Genov presents The English Orpheus: Yavor Genov plays John Dowland, a program devoted to the celebrated English composer and lutenist John Dowland. The album highlights some of Dowland’s lesser-known works, including Sir Henry Umpton’s Funeral, Farewell (An, In Nomine), and a unique composition written for Dowland by Mauritius Landgrave of Hessen, offering a fresh and intimate perspective on the “English Orpheus.”
Yavor Genov is a Bulgarian lutenist, basso continuo player, and musicologist renowned for his artistry and scholarship. A celebrated soloist across Europe, he has released five acclaimed recordings on Brilliant Classics, including Nicolas Vallet – Lute Music (2024) and Kapsberger – Libro Primo di Lauto (2013). Critics have praised his playing as “clever and immediately appealing” and “top-level execution.” Genov regularly performs with leading ensembles such as EUBO, Cordevento, and MusicAeterna at major venues including the Salzburg Festival, Berlin Philharmonie, and Concertgebouw. Also a scholar, he holds a PhD on Latin chant and has published extensively on Renaissance music
