Byron Janis (1928–2024) was an acclaimed American classical pianist celebrated for his virtuosity and resilience. A prodigy, he debuted with Toscanini’s NBC Symphony at 15 and studied under Vladimir Horowitz. He performed with major orchestras worldwide, became the youngest artist signed by RCA Victor, and was the first American pianist to perform in the Soviet Union under the 1960 Cultural Exchange. Despite developing psoriatic arthritis in 1973, he continued to perform and record. Honored internationally, he received the French Legion d’Honneur and multiple awards. Also a composer and author, his memoir Chopin and Beyond and a PBS documentary chronicled his remarkable life and spirit.
