Amandine Beyer and her ensemble Gli Incogniti present a vivid portrait of J. S. Bach as an artist deeply inspired by Italian music, far from the image of an isolated composer. Their program highlights Bach’s admiration for contemporaries such as Vivaldi and the Marcello brothers, whose works introduced him to a world of brightness, rhythmic vitality, and color. Through these influences, Bach absorbed a sense of expressive clarity and energy that continued to shape his musical language, a quality Beyer and Gli Incogniti bring to life with freshness and brilliance.
Founded in 2006 by violinist Amandine Beyer and a group of like-minded musicians, Gli Incogniti takes its name and inspiration from the 17th-century Venetian Accademia degli Incogniti, known for its curiosity and artistic freedom. The ensemble embodies this same adventurous spirit, embracing experimentation, rediscovery, and a fresh approach to both well-known and overlooked works. United by a shared passion and collaborative energy, they aim to convey deeply personal and historically informed interpretations. Today, Gli Incogniti is recognized as one of the leading ensembles in period performance, with a repertoire ranging from Baroque composers like Bach and Vivaldi to Classical masters such as Haydn and Mozart.
Born in 1974, French violinist Amandine Beyer studied at the Conservatoire de Paris and the Schola Cantorum Basel with Chiara Banchini, later working with Christophe Coin, Hopkinson Smith, and Pedro Memelsdorff. Winner of the 2001 Antonio Vivaldi Competition in Turin, she performs worldwide as soloist, concertmaster, and leader of her ensemble Gli Incogniti, which she founded in 2006 to explore Baroque and Classical repertoire with creativity and freedom. She also plays chamber music with renowned partners and co-founded the Kitgut Quartet, dedicated to period instruments. Highly acclaimed for her recordings, Beyer has taught Baroque violin at the Schola Cantorum Basel since 2010.
