Richard Wagner, one of the most influential and controversial composers of the late 19th century, inspired both devotion and opposition. The album Wagner Liaisons presents musical dialogues between Wagner’s own piano pieces and works by composers profoundly influenced by him. German pianist Matthias Kirschnereit dedicates this recording to exploring Wagner’s piano world—small in quantity but immense in impact—highlighting how Wagner’s innovations shaped the music of his contemporaries and successors.
Born in 1962, Matthias Kirschnereit has been a prominent German pianist for over three decades, performing across Europe, the Americas, and East Asia. He collaborates with leading orchestras such as the Camerata Salzburg, Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, and Münchener Kammerorchester, and with renowned chamber partners including Christian Tetzlaff, Sharon Kam, and Daniel Müller-Schott. With nearly 40 recordings, his repertoire centers on Schubert, Schumann, Mendelssohn, and Brahms, alongside rediscovered works by composers like Mendelssohn and Röntgen. A student of Renate Kretschmar-Fischer, his artistic lineage traces back to Franz Liszt. Now a professor at the Rostock University of Music and Drama, Kirschnereit is also active in outreach projects like “Rhapsody in School” and directs the East Frisian “Gezeitenkonzerte” festival.
