Violinist Alexandra Tirsu debuts with an album featuring Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1 and Hindemith’s rarely performed Violin Concerto, recorded with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under Vasily Petrenko. Shostakovich’s concerto, which has inspired her since childhood, unfolds as a psychological journey—from its shadowy opening and fiery scherzo to an expressive passacaglia and ironic finale. Hindemith’s work, first explored by Tirsu at the ARD Competition, offers a contrasting voice: precise, structured, and introspective. The album highlights Tirsu’s deep engagement with 20th-century music, combining technical mastery with emotional depth and a strong sense of personal and historical identity.
Alexandra Tirsu, a Moldovan violinist, is internationally acclaimed for her expressive artistry and award-winning performances. She won 3rd prize and the Audience Award at the 2021 ARD Competition and previously received accolades at the 2018 Seoul and 2014 Osaka International Music Competitions. Trained under Pavel Vernikov in Vienna and Janine Jansen in Sion, she has performed with conductors including Semyon Bychkov, Ronald Zollman, and Dmitri Jurowsky, and collaborated with renowned musicians such as Ivry Gitlis, Daishin Kashimoto, and Uto Ughi. An advocate for broadening classical audiences, she partners with Igudesman & Joo. Tirsu plays the 1717 “Reifenberg” Stradivari, on loan from The Stradivari Society, and has been a Thomastik-Infeld artist since 2021.
