Johann Sebastian Bach, largely independent of contemporary trends, transformed older musical forms with remarkable originality, influencing the trajectory of Western music. Notably, his sonatas for a melodic instrument, such as the viola da gamba, with obbligato harpsichord feature an equal dialogue between the instruments—a model later developed by his sons, Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven. Following their successful debut recording of Corelli’s Sonatas Op. 5, Teodoro Baù and Andrea Buccarella now release their second duo album, presenting Bach’s sonatas for viola da gamba and harpsichord, each work showcasing distinct stylistic nuances within a cohesive musical framework.

Teodoro Baù, born in Italy in 1992, began studying the viola da gamba with Claudia Pasetto and later graduated summa cum laude under Alberto Rasi. He also studied Renaissance lute with Massimo Lonardi for eight years, and continued his training at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis with Paolo Pandolfo and the Mozarteum University in Salzburg with Vittorio Ghielmi. Baù has won multiple awards, including first prize at the 2015 Bach-Abel Competition and the 2021 MA Festival Competition in Bruges. Based in Basel, he performs as a soloist and chamber musician, is a member of the ensemble La Fonte Musica, and teaches viola da gamba at the Urbino early music summer course.

Andrea Buccarella, born in Rome in 1987, is a harpsichordist, organist, and conductor. He began as a choirboy at the Sistine Chapel, studied organ and composition at the Conservatorio Santa Cecilia, and graduated in harpsichord and historical keyboards under Enrico Baiano. He earned two master’s degrees with honors at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis with Andrea Marcon. Artistic director of the Abchordis Ensemble, Buccarella has won the Musica Antiqua Bruges competition (2018) and the Outhere Award, with his CD TOCCATA receiving the Diapason d’Or Découverte (2020). He performs widely, focuses on rediscovering 18th-century Italian repertoire, and has been teaching harpsichord at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis since 2023.
