In May 2025, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw hosted the long-awaited Mahler Festival, postponed from 2020 due to the pandemic. Over two weeks, all of Mahler’s symphonies were performed in chronological order by leading orchestras. The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, under Chief Conductor Designate Klaus Mäkelä, performed Mahler’s Eighth Symphony twice, with both performances recorded. Decca has now released this recording digitally worldwide, with a CD edition available in Japan and Korea to coincide with the orchestra’s first Asian tour with Mäkelä later in the year.

Klaus Mäkelä, born 1996 in Helsinki, is a Finnish conductor and cellist. He studied conducting at the Sibelius Academy with Jorma Panula and cello with Marko Ylönen, Timo Hanhinen, and Hannu Kiiski. Mäkelä has been Chief Conductor of the Oslo Philharmonic since 2020 and Music Director of the Orchestre de Paris since 2021. He will assume the role of Chief Conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in 2027 and begin as Zell Music Director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra the same season. An exclusive Decca Classics artist, he has recorded major repertoire including Sibelius, Berlioz, Ravel, Stravinsky, Debussy, and Shostakovich. In 2025/26, he leads high-profile tours, residencies, and festival performances across Europe, Asia, and the United States.
