This album presents contemporary mazurkas composed between 2022 and 2024 for pianist Anna Kijanowska by twenty composers from diverse cultural backgrounds. While each piece reflects a unique style, all draw inspiration from traditional Polish dances such as the oberek, kujawiak, and mazurka. Known for her dedication to reviving this genre, Kijanowska offers interpretations that blend improvisation, virtuosity, and lyrical expression rooted in Polish folk traditions. Rather than quoting melodies directly, these works reimagine folk elements through refined modern paraphrases, reaffirming the mazurka’s timeless spirit and its renewed place in the international piano repertoire.
Polish pianist Anna Kijanowska began her studies in Bielsko-Biała and trained at the Szymanowski Music Academy in Katowice and the Wrocław Academy, later earning advanced degrees from the Manhattan School of Music in New York. Her mentors included Byron Janis, Mykola Suk, Sara Davis Buechner, and Marc Silverman. An active soloist and chamber musician, she has performed across Europe, the Americas, and Asia, collaborating with renowned artists and appearing on international radio and television. A passionate advocate of Polish music, she frequently presents contemporary works and promotes living composers. Also a respected pedagogue, Kijanowska teaches worldwide and currently serves on the faculty of the University of Silesia in Cieszyn.
