This digital release from pianist-composer Joseph Havlat continues the Royal Academy of Music’s Bicentenary Series. A distinguished Academy graduate, Havlat has quickly built an international career, performing across the UK, Europe, the US, Japan, and Australia. His Linn album presents music he treasures and frequently performs, built around the theme of folk influence: Janáček’s melodic idiom and Martinů’s rhythmic vitality form the programme’s core. The recording is framed by works of Kurtág and Havlat himself, serving as prologue and epilogue. The album functions both as homage and reflection, highlighting Havlat’s distinctive artistic voice.
Joseph Havlat is a London-based pianist and composer from Hobart, Australia. A graduate of the Royal Academy of Music, he earned both BMus and MMus degrees with distinction and received several major awards. Active as a soloist and chamber musician, he has performed across Europe, the UK, America, Japan and Australia. He is a prominent interpreter of new music, collaborating with composers such as Abrahamsen, Adams, Adès and Barry, and performing with leading artists including Ehnes and Isserlis. His compositions draw on natural sound worlds and modern textures, with recent commissions for viola, piano and mixed ensemble. He also teaches at the Royal Academy of Music.
