Standing at the crossroads of symphony and song cycle, Das Lied von der Erde expresses both the intoxication of life and the calm of renunciation, marking a clear departure from Mahler’s earlier Wunderhorn style. François-Xavier Roth and Les Siècles continue their acclaimed Mahler series with this visionary work, following successful recordings of the First and Fourth Symphonies. Their interpretation is distinguished by stylistic refinement, the use of period instruments, and the contribution of two outstanding vocal soloists, offering a nuanced and historically informed perspective on Mahler’s late musical language.
François-Xavier Roth (b. 1971) is a visionary conductor known for his inventive programming, charisma, and intellectual curiosity. Founder of Les Siècles in 2003, he explores repertoire on period instruments, revealing new perspectives on works from Rameau to Stravinsky. He has held leadership roles with Gürzenich Orchestra/Oper Köln (2015–24), SWR orchestras, and the London Symphony Orchestra, and will become Chief Conductor of SWR Symphonieorchester in 2025. Roth champions contemporary composers, curates landmark projects such as Ligeti’s centenary, and fosters outreach through youth programmes and community orchestras. His acclaimed discography spans Berlioz, Strauss, Ravel, and Stravinsky, earning him major international awards.
