In 1726, three years into his tenure as Cantor of Leipzig’s Thomaskirche, Johann Sebastian Bach temporarily set aside his own cantata production to perform eighteen cantatas by his cousin Johann Ludwig Bach in the city’s principal churches. At the time, Johann Ludwig served as Kapellmeister at the court of Meiningen. These cantatas survive exclusively through copies made by Johann Sebastian Bach, attesting to the high regard in which he held his cousin’s music. Capella Sollertia now presents the first complete recording of these remarkable works, offering new insight into an important but little-known chapter of the Bach family’s musical legacy.

Capella Sollertia is a Munich-based Baroque ensemble comprising internationally acclaimed singers and instrumentalists, led by artistic director Johanna Soller. The ensemble emerged from a highly praised 2019 performance of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244) and the concert series Cantate um 1715, presented monthly in Munich. Centered on the music of J. S. Bach and the Central German Baroque tradition, Capella Sollertia is known for its distinctive sound, described by critics as both “plaintively beautiful” and “intoxicatingly powerful.” With a strong commitment to thoughtfully conceived programs, the ensemble seeks to connect well-known masterpieces with rarely heard repertoire.

Johanna Soller (born 1989 in Burghausen, Germany) is a German conductor, harpsichordist, organist, and educator specializing in early music. She studied organ, harpsichord, church music, and historical performance practice at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München, graduating with honors, and further refined her training through masterclasses with leading figures in the field. An award-winning musician, she collaborates with renowned Baroque ensembles and serves as organist at Munich’s Church of St. Peter. Founder and artistic director of several ensembles, including Capella Sollertia, she has been appointed artistic leader of the Nederlandse Bachvereniging from May 2025.
