Mika Stoltzman is widely regarded as the world’s leading marimba virtuoso, celebrated for her imaginative, genre-crossing collaborations. Crossing the Bar is a carefully curated and boldly multi-idiomatic album that highlights the expressive range of the contemporary marimba. Drawing equally from contemporary classical and jazz traditions, the recording features a new arrangement of Bach’s Chaconne in D minor, works by John Zorn and Debussy, and the world-premiere recording of Miho Hazama’s Marimba Concerto No. 1. Performed with distinguished collaborators, the album showcases Stoltzman’s virtuosity and artistic vision while expanding the marimba’s modern repertoire.

Mika Stoltzman, originally from Amakusa in southern Japan, began her musical training in piano before discovering the marimba at age eighteen, uniting her interests in keyboard and percussion. She studied in Toronto with members of NEXUS and later settled in the United States, now residing in Boston. Stoltzman has performed extensively worldwide, appearing at major venues including Carnegie Hall and leading international festivals, and as soloist with prominent orchestras. Her discography spans more than two decades and includes acclaimed solo, chamber, and collaborative recordings. She is also known for pioneering performances such as the marimba premiere of Chick Corea’s Piano Concerto No. 1, underscoring her role as a leading advocate for the instrument.
