Robert Mann (1920–2018) was an influential American violinist, composer, conductor, and founding first violinist of the Juilliard String Quartet, serving from 1946 to 1997. A Juilliard graduate and Naumburg Competition winner, he built an international reputation through more than 5,000 performances and an extensive, award-winning discography spanning Beethoven to contemporary composers. In addition to a distinguished solo career, Mann composed over 30 works and conducted major orchestras, including the Boston and Seattle Symphonies. A dedicated educator and mentor, he guided leading string quartets and taught at Juilliard and Manhattan School of Music. His contributions earned numerous honors and widespread recognition in American musical life.
