Founded in Budapest in 1917, the Budapest Quartet became one of the most internationally acclaimed chamber ensembles of the twentieth century. Initially composed of members of the Budapest Opera Orchestra, the group quickly gained recognition for its refined ensemble playing and expansive repertory, ranging from Mozart to Bartók and Kodály. Despite several personnel changes, the quartet flourished under the leadership of Joseph Roisman, eventually relocating to the United States in 1938. As quartet-in-residence at the Library of Congress and later at SUNY Buffalo, they produced influential recordings, particularly of Beethoven’s quartets. Active until 1967, the ensemble significantly elevated chamber music’s prominence worldwide.
