Flutronix, the innovative duo of Nathalie Joachim and Allison Loggins-Hull, presents Black Being, a four-movement song cycle for flutes, electronics, voice, and chamber orchestra that explores and reclaims the Black female experience. Featuring the Chicago Sinfonietta under Mei-Ann Chen, the work sets poetry by Jaki Shelton Green and was acclaimed among the Chicago Tribune’s Top 10 Classical Music Events of 2021. Moving from reflections on the slave trade to affirmations of Black womanhood, the piece blends looping flute textures, electronics, and voice in a powerful contemporary statement.
Flutronix, founded in Brooklyn in 2007, is a boundary-crossing duo redefining classical music through performance, composition, and activism. Their large-scale projects include Discourse, a community-centered performance initiative, and Black Being, an electro-acoustic song cycle featuring poetry by Jaki Shelton Green. The duo also collaborate as producers, notably on Joachim’s Grammy-nominated Fanm d’Ayiti, and independently publish their chamber works. Active educators, they have held major institutional appointments; Joachim teaches at Princeton University, and Loggins-Hull serves as Composer Fellow with The Cleveland Orchestra.
