This program pairs baroque violin and double bass in a dialogue that transforms apparent contrast into cohesion. In works by Francesca Gemmo and Sergio Armaroli, the instruments converge where notation and improvisation, tradition and experimentation, form a unified expressive arc. The gut strings and supple resonance of the baroque violin invite an intimate, tactile listening experience, while the double bass contributes depth and temporal breadth. Through alternating solo and duo textures, the program unfolds like a compass tracing a circle, as written material and spontaneous gesture intertwine. Echo and silence become integral elements in an exploration of how sound is shaped, recalled, and reimagined.
Maya Homburger is a baroque violinist known for bridging early music and free improvisation. After moving to England, she became a leading member of English Baroque Soloists under John Eliot Gardiner. Her artistic direction evolved following her collaboration with composer and bassist Barry Guy, leading to the formation of the Homburger/Guy Duo. Together they have performed internationally across baroque, jazz, and contemporary festivals. Homburger is acclaimed for interpretations of Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber’s Mystery Sonatas and works by Johann Sebastian Bach. She records for ECM and her own MAYA label, and performs on historically preserved baroque violins alongside a modern instrument by Stefan-Peter Greiner.
Barry Guy is an innovative bassist and composer whose work spans jazz improvisation, chamber and orchestral music, and solo performance. Founder and Artistic Director of the London Jazz Composers Orchestra and the Barry Guy New Orchestra, he has created numerous extended compositions. In 2014, he formed the Blue Shroud Band to present The Blue Shroud, inspired by Picasso’s Guernica. Guy’s works have been widely performed, including commissions such as for the Kronos Quartet. Awarded an honorary doctorate from Middlesex University in 2016, he remains active across Europe in solo recitals and collaborations bridging improvised, baroque, and contemporary music.
