Ida Haendel (1928–2020), acclaimed as one of the twentieth century’s greatest violinists, captivated global audiences with performances that combined classical discipline and romantic intensity. A child prodigy born in Poland, she studied with George Enescu and Carl Flesch and achieved early international success, including a celebrated 1937 London debut at the Proms, where she ultimately appeared 68 times. Renowned for her interpretations of Brahms and Sibelius, she earned the composer’s personal praise for her mastery of his concerto. Haendel performed worldwide, recorded extensively, and inspired generations through her uncompromising artistry, technical command, and lifelong devotion to serving the composer above all.
