In this programme, Dutch cellist Lidy Blijdorp and pianist Tobias Borsboom explore late Romantic and early modern French chamber music associated with the Société Nationale de Musique. César Franck’s Violin Sonata, presented in Jules Delsart’s cello transcription approved by the composer, anchors the repertoire. Nadia Boulanger’s Trois Pièces (1914) reveal her refined lyricism and virtuosic flair, while Debussy’s Cello Sonata blends nocturnal atmosphere with classical clarity. The programme concludes with Matthijs Vermeulen’s Sonate pour violoncelle et piano, inspired by a 1918 Amsterdam performance of Debussy’s work and reflecting the Dutch composer’s subsequent artistic life in France.
Dutch cellist Lidy Blijdorp is acclaimed for her expressive depth and “breathtaking musicality,” praised by de Volkskrant and BBC Music Magazine for her versatility and virtuosity. Her debut album Journeyers received two Edison Awards in 2020. A cum laude graduate of the conservatories of The Hague, Amsterdam, and Paris, she continued her studies at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel with Gary Hoffman. Blijdorp has appeared as soloist with leading orchestras across Europe and Russia. Committed to new music, she has inspired numerous contemporary works written in her honor. She performs on a Farotti cello and Persoit bow, generously loaned by the Dutch Musical Instruments Foundation.
Dutch pianist Tobias Borsboom is acclaimed for his “golden touch” (Trouw) and vividly personal playing. A versatile and imaginative artist, he gained national recognition as winner of the Dutch Classical Talent Award and Audience Award, performing in major concert halls throughout the Netherlands. His repertoire spans core classics and contemporary works, presented in distinctive programmes such as Wanderer, and includes concerto appearances with leading orchestras. An active chamber musician and festival co-founder, Borsboom also engages in interdisciplinary projects, from literary concerts to music theatre. He studied with Paolo Giacometti and Jan Wijn and currently teaches at the Conservatory of Amsterdam.
