On their new CAvi Music album, the Pleyel Quartett Köln are joined by cellist Helga Löhrer to perform two string works by the German composer August Klughardt. Born in 1847 in Köthen, Klughardt developed a deep passion for music early in life under the influence of his father, a viola player. Beginning piano lessons at the age of ten, he received thorough training in both theory and performance from leading local musicians, establishing the foundation for a versatile musical career. Throughout his life, Klughardt balanced multiple roles as a pianist, composer, and conductor, each forming an essential part of his artistic identity.

Founded in 2004, the Pleyel Quartett Köln has established a strong reputation for rediscovering and performing neglected masterpieces of the string quartet repertoire. Named after the once-celebrated composer Ignaz Pleyel, the ensemble is dedicated to stylistic authenticity and the revival of overlooked works alongside well-known repertoire. Performing on period instruments with gut strings, the quartet achieves a rich, transparent sonority that reflects its deep engagement with historical performance practice. Its repertoire spans around 90 works by some 30 composers, from the classical period to the present day. The ensemble’s recordings, featuring composers such as Pleyel, Klughardt, Schumann, and Donizetti, have received significant critical acclaim, including the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik.

High Resolution 24-bit / 48 kHz
