Available on major streaming platforms and on compact disc from March, this recording stands out not only for its high performance and sound quality but also for the thoughtful vision behind its editorial concept. By reviving Ernő Dohnányi’s rarely performed Sextet, it reintroduces audiences and performers to a remarkable work of fin-de-siècle chamber music, notable for its thematic richness, structural clarity, and refined instrumental writing. Paired with Dvořák’s well-known Sextet, Op. 48, the program encourages a renewed appreciation of the string sextet as a medium for timbral and structural exploration at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, highlighting a repertoire deserving greater presence in modern concerts and recordings.
The Stradivari Sextet was formed in December 2001 by musicians of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia Symphony Orchestra during concerts organized for the international exhibition The Art of the Violin at Castel Sant’Angelo in Rome. What began as a one-time collaboration quickly evolved into a permanent ensemble recognized for its cohesion and expressive intensity. The group now performs regularly for major concert institutions across Italy and internationally, appearing in prestigious venues throughout Europe, Latin America, and China. Committed to both classical and contemporary repertoire, the Sextet has premiered works by several modern composers. Its recordings include acclaimed albums featuring sextets by Tchaikovsky, Schoenberg, Brahms, Dohnányi, and Dvořák.
